Rules for Using the Central Instrumentation Laboratory
The Central Instrumentation Laboratory was constructed as a joint-use laboratory for RIMD and the IFReC and as such, persons using the laboratory must consent to the following mutual agreements and rules for the use of the laboratory, in order to avoid any mutual inconveniences.
- 1. Hours open for use
In principal, there is no limit on the hours during which the Central Instrumentation Laboratory may be used. However, during the hours in which the laboratory staff is off duty, the use of the facility by new personnel alone is prohibited. In addition, when anyone who is not a member of RIMD or IFReC wants to use the Central Instrumentation Laboratory, they must notify the staff and receive permission.
- 2. Using the regular equipment at the laboratory
Persons using the equipment at the Central Instrumentation Laboratory must reserve the use of the equipment by the website. Persons not skilled in the use of the equipment must either operate the equipment in conjunction with a skilled person or make arrangements with the staff for assistance in advance. After using the laboratory, the prescribed methods must be employed to clean and tidy up the equipment and any attachments,. In the case that an accident occurs while operating the equipment, or damage or equipment breakdowns are discovered, the staff must be notified immediately. In principal, expendable supplies must be provided by each individual user.
- 3. Using the ultracentrifuge
Especially in regard to using the ultracentrifuge, there is the possibility of a bad accident, and accordingly, when you first use it, always do so in conjunction with someone who is skilled in the operation of the equipment. In addition, we have made all of the related usage cautions readily available, so be sure to read them carefully before you actually use the equipment.
- 4. The liquid nitrogen storage container
When you use the liquid nitrogen storage container, follow the instructions of the persons in charge of the various department fields. In addition, when you use liquid nitrogen in an experiment, etc., bring your own container and fill them with the liquid nitrogen yourself.
- 5. Using the electron microscope
When you want to use the electron microscope, call extension number 8350 (Omori) and consult with the laboratory staff.
- 6. Other items requiring caution
When you want to take attachments or user manuals out of the Central Instrumentation Laboratory, you must apply for permission with the staff of the laboratory. Furthermore, any user manual borrowed must be returned within the same day as it was taken out of the laboratory. Do not change the settings of any of the software, or the software itself, in any of the computers within the laboratory.
Take care not to spill any reagents or samples on the experiment tables, floor, or in the ultracentrifuge. In the case where you do spill something, wipe it up immediately.
The ingestion of food and drinks, and smoking is prohibited within the laboratory.

- 1. A reservation is required for the use of the ultracentrifuge and the rotor.
- 2. Persons not skilled in the use of the ultracentrifuge must use the equipment in conjunction with a person who is skilled in its use.
- 3. Be sure to insert and take out samples outside the chamber.
- 4. Make sure good balance is maintained. Also check once again to make sure the buckets are set symmetrically.
- 5. When setting the rotor on the motor shaft, make sure it is set correctly. In addition, when using a cold rotor, wipe off any excess water drops before setting it.
- 6. When using the swing bucket rotor, make sure the buckets are attached to the hinge pins. Regardless of the number of samples used, all 6 buckets must be used.
- 7. When closing the cap of the vertical rotor, make sure you use the tools provided, and also make sure the cap is closed firmly.
- 8. After starting the procedure, carefully observe the equipment until the preset rotation speed is achieved.
- 9. If you notice any abnormal vibration, hit the stop button immediately, and contact a staff member.
- 10. After the centrifuge procedure is finished, always wash the rotor with water, dry it, and restore it to its prescribed storage location.
- 11. Do not leave or place any items on top of the ultracentrifuge.
- 12. When the specific gravity of a solution is higher than 1.2, such as with a cesium chloride solution, lower the maximum number of rotation speed by 10 or 20%.
- 13. After using the equipment, if there is even the smallest item that catches your attention, be sure to report it to a staff member.
